Who we are
La Fe Taqueria comes from years of experience, hard work, setbacks, and a genuine love for bringing people together through food.
Food has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. In 2013, I took that passion and opened a small food truck on Thayer Street in Providence called Fugo, short for Fusion Gourmet. Our menu brought Asian and Mexican flavors together through tacos and other street food.
We learned the business as we went. There were long days, mistakes, and plenty of trial and error, but every experience helped shape the way I cook and run a business today.
Over time, Fugo grew beyond the food truck. We began catering events throughout New England and built a loyal following along the way. By 2019, we felt ready to open our first restaurant.
Then the pandemic changed everything.
Like many small food businesses, we had to shut down and figure out what came next. During that time, my wife and I started restoring and reselling mid-century furniture. That small idea eventually became Retro Plus Modern, a workshop and showroom in Central Falls. Starting over in a completely different industry taught us how to adapt, create better systems, and build something from the ground up again.
But I never stopped thinking about food.
After several years away from the kitchen, I had the opportunity to return with a clearer vision and a better understanding of the kind of restaurant I wanted to create. Fugo was built around fusion, but La Fe Taqueria is more focused. It brings me back to the Mexican food and flavors that inspired me from the beginning.
I come from a Dominican background, but I have spent years learning about, cooking, and developing a deep respect for Mexican cuisine. La Fe is my way of honoring those traditions while bringing my own life experience and point of view to the food.
La Fe Taqueria is more than a restaurant to me. It represents everything it took to get here: the lessons, the setbacks, the changes, and the decision to keep going.
La Fe means hope. After everything it took to get here, that name felt right.
And now we get to start this new chapter right here on Hope Street in Providence.
